MAINE VACATION RENTALS

Built by "freemen," circa 1790, Barnacles was moved by barge from its original Southport site to its current location in 1965. It is best known for its original hand-hewn wide beams, beach access and views of lower Mark Island. One floor with kitchen, dining room, living room, sleeping loft and open deck. Rocky coastline, open ocean, and small private beach are just a few of the natural wonders of Barnacles. The cottage features Hand-Hewn beams and wide boards, original to the structure. Barnacles offers spectacular views of lower Mark Island from the picture windows and open deck. Easy access to the ocean encourages you to explore the tidal pools or kayak the coastline. When you come to this little cottage, you will love the solitude and sounds of the ocean. After enjoying the incredible sunsets, get cozy by the wood burning fireplace or marvel at the star-studded night skies.

Visit the Southport Memorial Library to check out the famous Ruby Slippers and learn about their connection to the area. While you are there, borrow a Rachel Carson book and explore some of her favorite spots on the island. Farmers markets and food stands are THE spot to buy fresh and local. Don't forget the seafood! Lobster abounds in this area and can be purchased at the many lobster pounds on the island, including Robinson's Wharf and Oliver's Restaurant. The Southport General Store is known for its breakfast pizza and sandwiches and extensive wine collection and gift barn.

The Boothbay Peninsula is a beautiful region rich in culture, history, all things nautical and of course its own unique niche in nature. The area offers ample opportunities for biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, charters and guided cruises, spas, golf, mini-golf, bowling, museums, antiquing, hiking and walking trails. We have the Maine State Aquarium, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Boothbay Region Land Trust with its 30+ miles of pet-friendly trails in protected areas.

Southport Island is a hidden treasure on the Boothbay Peninsula. Two miles from Boothbay Harbor, you cross the bridge onto the island and feel the world change around you. You know you are on vacation. Small sandy beaches, large expanses of rocky shoreline, views of Islands and open ocean, walking, kayaking, fishing and more! This quaint and historical part of Maine is treasured by the few who know of it! From the shore, you can see Cape Island once owned by Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. A pair of Ruby Red Slippers is on display at the Island’s library. Hendricks Head Lighthouse and Beach are just a short ride away for those who prefer swimming on more of a sandy beach. Rachel Carson frequented Southport often and mentions the area in her books. The Cuckolds Lighthouse can be seen just offshore. This small little spit of land is rich in history, marine life, unique ecology and more. You will come back again and again!
